Original Location: The Katholikon (main church) of the Stavronikita Monastery, Mount Athos.
Artist: It is attributed to Theophanes the Cretan, a famous iconographer of the Cretan School who was active in the mid-1500s.
Iconography:
- The Theotokos: Mary is shown in a deep purple maphorion (veil), pointing toward Christ as the source of salvation.
- The Christ Child: He is dressed in an vibrant orange/saffron robe, holding a scroll (representing the Word of God) and offering a blessing.
- Inscription: You can see the Greek abbreviations for "Mother of God" (MP OY) at the top and "Jesus Christ" (IC XC) near Christ's halo.
