The iconographic depiction of the Mystical Supper captures Jesus Christ and His twelve disciples gathered in an upper room to observe the Jewish Passover during their final meal before His Passion. This majestic icon holds profound theological significance as it visually refers to the institution of the Holy Eucharist. The background typically features a symmetrical building with a central dome positioned directly behind Christ to accentuate His presence, alongside a red canopy that symbolizes the indoor setting.

As the central and most prominent figure, Christ is often rendered larger than the disciples to emphasize His supreme importance. He is typically the only individual adorned with a halo, reflecting that the Holy Spirit had not yet descended upon the disciples. His attire carries traditional symbolic meaning, featuring an outer blue garment representing His human nature and an inner red garment symbolizing His Divinity. The composition of the table itself is notably curved at the top and straight at the bottom, holding various foods, drinks, and utensils with a piece of bread placed before every disciple.

The arrangement of the disciples around the table conveys specific hierarchical and relational dynamics. Peter sits immediately to Christ's right side, while John, the beloved disciple, rests on His left, often depicted leaning over onto Christ's chest for comfort. Positioned at the outermost lower edges of the table are Philip and Thomas, identifiable as the youngest disciples by their lack of beards. Judas Iscariot is traditionally placed on the left side of the table leaning forward to dip his bread into the central bowl—though variations do exist—and is similarly portrayed as young and unbearded.

This rich visual tradition draws its foundational narrative directly from the New Testament Gospels. Scriptural accounts of this sacred event are found in Matthew 26:17-30, Mark 14:12-26, Luke 22:7-38, and John 13:1-30. Through these carefully chosen elements of composition, color, and positioning, the icon serves as both a historical narrative and a timeless theological window into the Last Supper.
