The Feast of the Protection of the Theotokos commemorates a 10th-century miraculous apparition at the Church of Blachernae in Constantinople. According to the life of Saint Andrew the Fool-for-Christ, the Virgin Mary appeared above the congregation and spread her veil over the faithful, symbolizing her constant intercession and defense of all Christians.

The Miracle: Beheld by Saint Andrew and his disciple Epiphanius, the vision serves as a testament to the Virgin Mary's role as a "bright cloud" of protection against spiritual and physical foes.
