Humble Devotion and Human Rivalry
Saint Romanos the Melodist was born in fifth-century Syria and developed a profound love for God from a young age. After serving as a reader in Beirut, he moved to Constantinople, where his extreme piety and dedication to the Church caught the attention of the Patriarch. Romanos was the first to arrive at services and the last to leave, performing every task—from lighting vigil lamps to chanting—with deep reverence. However, his rapid appointment as an official singer at the Great Church of Hagia Sophia sparked intense jealousy among the more experienced readers, who viewed the newcomer as an untalented outsider.
The Miracle of the Scroll
The tension reached a breaking point during the Christmas Eve services, attended by the Emperor and the Patriarch. Seeking to humiliate Romanos, his rivals pushed him into the center of the cathedral, demanding he improvise a hymn as was the custom. Paralyzed by stage fright and lacking the words, Romanos fled in tears and prayed desperately before an icon of the Mother of God. That night, the Virgin Mary appeared to him in a vision, presenting him with a small paper scroll and commanding him to swallow it. Upon waking, Romanos found his heart filled with joy and his mind overflowing with sacred, poetic language.
The Birth of the Kontakion
On Christmas morning, Romanos returned to the cathedral and sang the now-famous hymn, "Today the Virgin gives birth to the transcendent One." The congregation was spellbound by the beauty of the melody and the depth of the lyrics, which clearly explained the mystery of the Incarnation. When he revealed that his talent was a miraculous gift, his former rivals were humbled, and Romanos went on to become one of the greatest hymnographers in history. He is credited with composing over a thousand kontakia, many of which remain a vital part of Orthodox liturgical tradition today.
