A Life of Humble Beginnings

Born Evangelos Baϊraktaris in 1906 on the island of Euboia, the future Saint Porphyrios emerged from a background of profound material poverty but rich spiritual devotion. One of several children in a struggling farming family, he received only a single year of formal education before entering the workforce at age seven to support his kin. Despite these earthly hardships—including his father’s departure to work on the Panama Canal—Evangelos felt a powerful internal pull toward the divine. Inspired by the life of Saint John the Hut Burner, he fled to Mount Athos at the age of twelve, where he lived in rigorous, absolute obedience to two austere elders at the hermitage of Kavsokalyvia.

The Path of Service and Grace

Though he was tonsured into the Great Schema and granted the spiritual gift of clairvoyance at a young age, health complications forced him to leave the Holy Mountain at nineteen. He returned to Euboia, where he was ordained as a priest under the name Porphyrios and quickly rose to the rank of Archimandrite. His ministry eventually led him to the Athens Polyclinic in 1940, where he spent thirty-three years serving as a spiritual father to the sick and suffering. Balancing his roles as a humble laborer and a gifted confessor, he later established a monastery in Milesi, laboring tirelessly on the construction of the Monastery of the Transfiguration even as he faced blindness and failing health.

A Return to the Mountain

In his twilight years, Saint Porphyrios prepared for his repose with the same humility that defined his youth, desiring to avoid worldly honors. In 1991, sensing his end was near, he returned to the very same hut on Mount Athos where his monastic journey had begun seven decades earlier. He passed away peacefully on December 2, 1991, with his final breaths dedicated to the prayer for Christian unity. His lifelong dedication to the relief of human pain and his profound spiritual insight were formally recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate with his canonization as a saint in 2013.
