Saint Peter the Aleut is commemorated in the Life of Saint Herman of Alaska on December 13. His martyrdom is known through an account left by Simeon Yanovsky, a former colonial official who later became the schemamonk Sergius. Yanovsky recounted a conversation with Father Herman detailing how fourteen Aleut hunters were captured by Spanish authorities in California and subjected to forced religious conversion.
While imprisoned two to a cell, the captives were pressured by Spanish religious leaders—referred to as Jesuits in the account, though actually Franciscans—to accept Catholicism. The Aleuts firmly refused, maintaining their identity as Orthodox Christians. In response, their captors selected one of the Aleuts and subjected him to brutal torture, severing the joints of his feet and hands while his cellmate was forced to watch. Despite the severe trauma and blood loss, the victim continuously confessed his faith until his death.
The torturers planned to execute the remaining cellmate the following day, but an urgent order arrived from Monterey that night commanding the immediate release and transfer of the surviving captives. The witnessing Aleut escaped torture, was sent to Monterey with the others, and later reported the martyr's ordeal to Russian authorities. When Father Herman learned of these events and heard that the martyr's name was Peter, he knelt before an icon, crossed himself, and venerated Peter as a Holy New Martyr.
Although historical details regarding Saint Peter's early life remain minimal—beyond his origins in Kodiak—his steadfast witness is compared to that of Saint James the Persian and the early Christian martyrs. Through his refusal to abandon his faith under severe torture, Saint Peter is honored as an equal to the martyrs of antiquity and the New Martyrs, celebrated for his enduring confession of faith and heavenly reward.
About Our Icons (Print and Mounted):
Theophany Works Icons are handcrafted Orthodox Christian icon reproductions made in the United States with prayer and a desire for excellence. Each of our icons are printed on museum-quality matte canvas, providing a rich print with saturated coloration that lends to a beautiful handwritten-icon appearance.
All Theophany Works Icons are mounted on beveled wooden boards and finished with a high-quality UV protection sealant. This offers a subtle authentic-feeling texture while also enhancing durability, allowing for cleaning with a damp cloth. Additionally, each icon is given a maple-shelled keyhole slot on its back for easy and balanced hanging.
Our beautiful icon reproductions are lovingly made in our Lancaster, Pennsylvania studio. We pray they are a blessing to all who receive them, and we believe they will be a beloved addition to any home or parish—each at a fraction of the cost of a hand-painted icon.
