Description
Feast Day/Commemorated: July 11
Saint Olga, the Great Princess of Kiev, assumed the governance of Kievan Rus following the death of her husband, Prince Igor, who was killed by the pagan Drevlyanians in 945. At the time of Igor's death, Christianity was gaining significant ground alongside native paganism, as evidenced by the dual Christian and pagan oaths sworn in the Russo-Byzantine Treaty of 944. Upon taking power, Olga severely put down the Drevlyanian rebellion and established a centralized administrative system of pogosti (trade, administrative, and legal centers), which replaced arbitrary tribute collection with orderly taxation and laid the foundation for the territorial and political consolidation of the Rus state.
Recognizing that the long-term stability and cultural elevation of Rus depended on spiritual and geopolitical integration rather than mere conquest, Olga traveled to Constantinople around 954–957. There, she embraced Orthodoxy, was baptized by Patriarch Theophylactus with Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitos acting as her godfather, and received the Christian name Helen. Her baptism constituted a major diplomatic and cultural achievement, proving that Kievan Rus could engage with the Byzantine Empire as an equal and absorb its spiritual, legal, and architectural heritage.
Upon returning to Rus, Olga dedicated herself to evangelization and civic development. She initiated the construction of key wooden churches—including Saint Sophia and Saint Nicholas in Kiev, and the Holy Trinity in Pskov— establishing structural centers that would later become permanent parishes across the realm. However, her efforts to formally establish a Christian hierarchy met with resistance. Her son, Svyatoslav, retained his pagan beliefs and rejected his mother’s faith, while a pagan faction among the noble elite grew in power, frustrating both her domestic efforts and a subsequent Western mission led by Bishop Adalbert of Trier.
About Our Icons (Print and Mounted):
Theophany Works Icons are handcrafted Orthodox Christian icon reproductions made in the United States with prayer and a desire for excellence. Each of our icons are printed on museum-quality matte canvas, providing a rich print with saturated coloration that lends to a beautiful handwritten-icon appearance.
All Theophany Works Icons are mounted on beveled wooden boards and finished with a high-quality UV protection sealant. This offers a subtle authentic-feeling texture while also enhancing durability, allowing for cleaning with a damp cloth. Additionally, each icon is given a maple-shelled keyhole slot on its back for easy and balanced hanging.
Our beautiful icon reproductions are lovingly made in our Lancaster, Pennsylvania studio. We pray they are a blessing to all who receive them, and we believe they will be a beloved addition to any home or parish—each at a fraction of the cost of a hand-painted icon.
***Our Beloved Brothers & Sisters in Christ: Please allow 3 weeks for production as each icon is made to order. If an icon is needed sooner for a baptism, chrismation, wedding, or name day, please contact us—we will always do our very best to accommodate your request.
