Restoring the Monastery of Saint George

Monastery of Saint George Chalki Corinth

From Our Parnter Dionysius Makris - The Holy Monastery of Saint George

In 2023, Father George Schoinas, vicar of the Holy Church of Saint Nicholas, sent word that a monastery restablished by Father John Romanidis, Father George Metallinos, and the Theologian-Lawyer Athanasios Sakarellos in Chalki, Corinth, was on the verge of collapse. It had been abandoned by the sister of the latter, who inherited the monastery from her brother, Athanasios Sakarellos. The latter suffered from dementia and did not manage to transfer it to a brotherhood, as the three founders intended.

At the urging of Father George Schoinas, a decision was made to undertake the rebuilding of the monastery, especially the Holy Church, which was built in 1897.

The monastery was purchased from Ms. Sophia Sakarellou for 60,000 euros. Besides the Katholikon (i.e., the Holy Church), there are four other buildings within the monastery, which from time to time hosted the aforementioned individuals where they wrote their books. In one of the buildings, there is a library, richer than that of many schools of theology. The monastery also owns an area of 16 acres with olive, walnut, pear, fig trees, and more.

Our goal is to thoroughly renovate it and hand it over to a brotherhood. We have already managed to renovate the first building, where we are hosting a poor rural family, whose presence also guards the monastery. We hope, with God's help, that by summer, the roof restoration work of the Holy Church will be completed, and the necessary support works will be done. Subsequently, we will demolish one building, which dates from 1945, and in its place, we will build the monks' cells. The church will be refurbished with the replacement of the Bishop's throne, choir stalls, and seats, the paving of the floor, etc., the landscaping of the outdoor areas, and the expansion of the library to include a reading room. With God's help, we will also drill a well at the spot indicated by Saint Porphyrios to the blessed Athanasios Sakarellos.

Our aim is for it to become a missionary and catechetical center and for an active, dynamic brotherhood to take it over. I am sending you photographic material from the Holy Monastery of Saint George.
