This icon beautifully portrays the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary alongside her Son and our God, Jesus Christ. Sometimes, angels overshadow her in these depictions, a powerful visual link to the Ark of the Covenant from the Old Testament. Just as the Ark was a sacred vessel containing the Glory of God and overshadowed by angels, the Virgin Mary's womb held the fullness of the Godhead.

Her womb is described as "More spacious than the heavens" (Πλατυτέρα των Ουρανών), an awe-inspiring concept highlighting that she contained the Creator of the universe—He who cannot be contained by all of creation. She is the very Throne of the Most High, where the Mercy Seat, once empty, is now occupied by the King of Kings.
