The Feast of the Synaxis of the Theotokos - Flight Into Egypt
On the second day of the Nativity, the Church celebrates the Synaxis of the Most Holy Mother of God. While the first day focuses on the birth of the Savior, the second day shifts our gaze toward the Holy Family’s first great trial: The Flight into Egypt.
Historically known in ancient calendars as the feast of "The Flight into Egypt," this day commemorates the urgent journey taken to preserve the life of the Divine Child.
The Divine Warning and the Escape
Following the adoration of the Magi, the joy of the Nativity was immediately met with the shadow of Herod’s wrath. An Angel of the Lord appeared to Saint Joseph in a dream, delivering a command of life-or-death urgency:
"Arise, take the young Child and His Mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him." (Matthew 2:13)
Before the tragic massacre of the 14,000 Holy Innocents could take place, the Mother of God and the Righteous Joseph became refugees, traveling into a foreign land to protect the Redeemer.
Prophetic Fulfillment
The Church recognizes this flight not merely as an escape, but as the fulfillment of ancient prophecy. As the Holy Family entered the land of the Pharaohs, they brought the Light of the World to a place once defined by spiritual darkness:
-
Isaiah 19:1: "Behold, the Lord sits on a swift cloud, and shall come to Egypt, and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at His presence."
-
Hosea 11:1: "Out of Egypt have I called my Son."
Church Tradition holds that as Christ entered Egypt, the pagan idols literally toppled from their pedestals, unable to stand in the presence of the Living God.
The Iconography of the Journey
In the icons of the Synaxis, the Flight into Egypt is often central. These images depict a stark, mountainous landscape through which the Mother of God travels:
-
The Virgin and Child: Mary sits upon a donkey, holding the Infant Christ and often looking back toward Joseph, reflecting the anxiety and solemnity of their exile.
-
Saint Joseph: He leads the way with his staff, carrying the burden of protecting the Son of God.
-
Saint James: Tradition holds that Joseph’s son, James (the Brother of the Lord), accompanied them, often depicted leading the donkey and carrying a rush basket.
-
The Fallen Idols: In the background, a fortified Egyptian city is shown with its idols falling from the walls, signaling the spiritual victory of Christ over the old world.
While we continue to praise the Virgin for her role in the Incarnation, the second day of the Nativity serves as a poignant reminder of her strength and obedience during the Flight into Egypt—a journey that ensured the salvation of the human race.
