Feast Day/Commemorated: Synaxis of the Holy Archangels November 8

Chief Commander Michael, whose name means "who is like unto God," stands as a faithful servitor of God, appointed over all Nine Ranks of angels. He courageously cast down the arrogant Lucifer and other rebellious spirits from Heaven, rallying the angelic hosts with the cry, "Let us attend! Let us stand aright before our Creator and do not consider doing what is displeasing unto God!" Church Tradition credits Archangel Michael with numerous significant roles throughout the Old Testament, demonstrating his unwavering devotion and immense power.

Archangel Michael's divine intervention is evident in pivotal moments of salvation and protection. During the Exodus, he guided the Israelites as a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night, ensuring their escape and annihilating their pursuers. He appeared to Joshua at Jericho, revealed the Lord's will, and was instrumental in the destruction of 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, the smiting of Heliodorus, and the miraculous preservation of the Three Holy Youths in the fiery furnace. His protective reach extended to transporting the Prophet Habbakuk to feed Daniel in the lions' den and even disputing with the devil over Moses' body, showcasing his continuous intercession on behalf of God's chosen.

Throughout history, especially in Rus, Archangel Michael has been revered for countless miracles, offering protection from invaders and defending the faithful. Accounts like the saving of Novgorod the Great from Batu's invasion, where Michael forbade entry, highlight his unwavering guardianship. His significance is reflected in the numerous monasteries, cathedrals, and churches dedicated to him, including a prominent burial church in the Moscow Kremlin. As a powerful spiritual warrior, Saint Michael is invoked for protection against enemies, both physical and spiritual, and for victory in battle.
