Saint Lupos
Living at the turn of the 4th century, Saint Lupus was the devoted servant of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica, famously sanctifying his own garments and his master's ring with Demetrius's blood following his execution. Using these relics and the power of the martyr’s name, Lupus performed numerous miracles and boldly destroyed pagan idols in Thessalonica, surviving initial attempts on his life through divine protection. Ultimately, he voluntarily surrendered to his persecutors under the Emperor Maximian Galerius, choosing to seal his faith through decapitation and earning his own crown of martyrdom.
Saint Artemios
The historical and hagiographical identity of Artemius is a complex blend of tradition and conflicting records, primarily identifying him as an Egyptian-born senator and a high-ranking official under Constantius II. Though some sources famously credit him with recovering the relics of the Apostles Andrew, Luke, and Timothy—an act that purportedly earned him the governorship of Egypt—other contemporary accounts remain silent on this role. As dux Aegypti, Artemius was a controversial figure who supported the Arian bishop George of Cappadocia, participating in the suppression of both pagan and Orthodox Christian groups, including the pursuit of Saint Athanasius. His life ended abruptly following the accession of Julian the Apostate; while some traditions maintain he was martyred in Antioch for defending Christian priests and refusing to renounce his faith, secular historians like Ammianus Marcellinus suggest he was executed for administrative abuses committed against the people of Alexandria.
Saint Mercurios
During the Decian persecution of 249 AD, Saint Mercurius was a celebrated soldier who received a heavenly visitation from the Archangel Michael, urging him to remain steadfast in his faith despite the coming trials. When summoned by the Emperor to offer incense to pagan idols in gratitude for military victory, Mercurius openly declared his devotion to Jesus Christ, leading to his immediate loss of rank and subsequent torture. Fearing a public uprising due to the young soldier's popularity, the Emperor had him transferred in chains to Caesarea, where Mercurius was ultimately beheaded in 250 AD at the age of twenty-five.
This striking image features three military saints depicted in the Byzantine Palaeologan style. These specific frescoes are from the Protaton Church in Karyes, on Mount Athos, Greece.
They are the work of the famous master painter Manuel Panselinos, dating to the late 13th century (approximately 1290 AD).
