Feast Day/Commemorated: July 27

Saint Panteleimon, originally named Pantoleon, was born in Nicomedia to a pagan father and a Christian mother. Though his mother, Saint Euboula, tried to raise him in the Christian faith, her early death led him to a pagan education and medical studies under a renowned physician. His skills attracted Emperor Maximian's attention, who sought to make him his royal physician. However, Pantoleon's life took a divine turn when he met the secretly living hieromartyr Hermolaus, who introduced him to Christianity. A profound miracle solidified his faith: upon praying to Jesus Christ, he witnessed a child, fatally bitten by a snake, come back to life, and the snake die.

After this miracle, Pantoleon was baptized by Saint Hermolaus, receiving the name Panteleimon, meaning "all-merciful." He then convinced his father to convert after miraculously healing a blind man in his presence. Upon his father's death, Saint Panteleimon dedicated his life to healing the sick and suffering without charge, solely by invoking the name of Jesus Christ. His widespread renown for healing, even among Christian prisoners, drew the envy of other doctors. They reported him to Emperor Maximian, who, after witnessing Panteleimon heal a paralytic where pagan priests failed, subjected the saint to horrific tortures.

Despite brutal attempts at execution—including being scraped with hooks, burned, stretched on a rack, thrown into boiling tar, and cast into the sea with a stone—Saint Panteleimon miraculously remained unharmed, strengthened by divine intervention. His steadfast faith led to the martyrdom of Hermolaus and his companions, and even wild beasts in the circus refused to harm him. Finally, at his execution, the sword softened, and a heavenly voice called him to the Kingdom. Saint Panteleimon instructed his executioners to complete their task, and upon his beheading, the olive tree to which he was tied miraculously bore fruit. His body, unharmed by fire, was buried by Christians, and his relics were distributed, venerated throughout the Christian world, particularly in Russia, where he is honored as a powerful healer and protector of soldiers.
