Feast Day/Commemorated: December 18

Saint Modestos was born into a Christian family in Sebasteia, Cappadocia, in Asia Minor. Drawn to a life of asceticism, he became a monk on Mount Sinai and later rose to become the abbot of the Monastery of Saint Theodosios the Great in Palestine.

In 614, a Persian army led by King Chosroes invaded Syria and Palestine, resulting in the massacre of 90,000 Christians and the destruction of many churches. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, Zachariah, was captured and taken away with a multitude of other Christians, along with the Holy Cross. In the patriarch's absence, Modestos was appointed to temporarily lead the Church of Jerusalem.

With the aid of Patriarch John the Merciful of Alexandria, Modestos worked to rebuild the devastated holy sites, including the Lord's Tomb. He also oversaw the burial of monks who had been killed at the Monastery of Saint Savva the Sanctified. Fourteen years later, Patriarch Zachariah returned from captivity with the Holy Cross, and after his death, Modestos was made the Patriarch of Jerusalem. He passed away in 634 at the age of 97. Today, his head is venerated at the Simonopetra Monastery on Mount Athos.

About Our Icons (Print and Mounted):

Theophany Works Icons are handcrafted reproductions, made with prayer and a desire for excellence. Choose from our standard  mounted option on Museum Quality Paper or you may choose to upgrade to Museum Quality Matte Canvas. Both offer a rich print with saturated coloration and are finished with our high-grade UV protection sealant offering a subtle tactile texture that gives our icons a truly authentic feel. Additionally, each Maple-shelled panel is prepared with a painted chamfered front edge as well as a round-over on the back edge to give a shadow box effect when hung on the wall. Our Icons come standard with a sliding key-hole slot on the back which allows for balanced hanging. These beautiful American-made reproductions will be a beloved addition to any home or parish at the fraction of the cost of a hand painted icon.
