Description
Feast Day/Commemorated: July 22
In the 14th century, on the island of Chios, lived Saint Markella, daughter of the town's mayor. Raised in devout Christian faith by her parents, she endured the early loss of her mother, a tragedy that plunged her father into a deep depression. Markella, with unwavering devotion to Christ, sought to maintain her virginity, steadfastly resisting the numerous temptations cast by the Devil. When his efforts proved futile, the Evil One turned his malevolent gaze upon her father, igniting within him an unnatural and perverse lust for his own child. One fateful day, the father brazenly declared his wicked desire. Markella, horrified and weeping, fled. Reaching the water's edge with no escape, a rock miraculously opened, enveloping her lower body. Her father, consumed by fury at being denied his abhorrent desire, arrived and tragically beheaded her. To this day, the miraculous rock, from which healing waters are said to flow, stands as a testament to Saint Markella the Virgin-Martyr in her dedicated church on Chios.
