Description
Feast Day/Commemorated: July 24
Born into a wealthy family in the third century, the young Christina was the daughter of Urban, the governor of Tyre. At just 11 years old, her exceptional beauty attracted many suitors, but her father had other plans, intending for her to become a pagan priestess. To that end, he placed her in a special room filled with gold and silver idols, commanding her to burn incense before them. In her solitude, however, Christina began to question who the true creator of the world was, realizing that the inanimate idols she was told to worship were nothing more than human creations. She began to pray to an unknown God, and in her heartfelt prayers, an angel appeared to her, revealing the true faith of Christ.
After her divine encounter, Christina smashed all the idols in her room and threw them out the window. When her enraged father discovered her actions, he had her beaten and thrown into prison. Her mother's pleas for her to renounce her faith were met with steadfast resistance. Urban then brought his daughter to trial, where she firmly confessed her faith in Christ. As punishment, she was tied to an iron wheel over a fire, but an angel appeared in her prison cell that night, healing her wounds and providing her with nourishment. Her father, witnessing this, ordered her to be drowned at sea. Miraculously, she was sustained by an angel and reappeared before him.
Her father, Urban, was terrified by her survival and planned to execute her the next morning, but he died suddenly that night. Two subsequent governors, Dion and Julian, continued to torment Christina, but her faith remained unyielding. Despite being subjected to various tortures, including being thrown into a red-hot furnace for five days, she emerged unharmed and alive. Her miraculous survival converted many to Christianity, and finally, she was executed with a sword. Her story is one of unwavering faith and miraculous resilience in the face of immense persecution.
