Feast Day/Commemorated: August 10
Saint Blane (c. 530–590) was a monk from the Isle of Bute who established a monastery in what is now Dunblane, Scotland. The son of a Pictish king, he was educated in Ireland and was a nephew of Saint Catan, who founded a monastery on the Isle of Bute in the mid-500s. Blane succeeded his uncle as abbot and bishop of the region. The monastery flourished until it was destroyed by Norse attacks around 800. The ruins of St Blane's Church, built on the site in the 1200s, are still visible today.
Blane later founded another monastery on the site of an old Roman fort north of Stirling. This area became known as Dunblane, and the monastery's site is where Dunblane Cathedral stands today. After his death in 590, his body was returned to Bute and buried near the monastery he had once led.
Saint Blane's legacy is also preserved in several place names. The Blane Water river, the valley of Strath Blane, the village of Strathblane, and the Strathblane Hills are all named in his honor.
About Our Icons (Print and Mounted):
Theophany Works Icons are handcrafted reproductions, made with prayer and a desire for excellence. Choose from our standard mounted option on Museum Quality Paper or you may choose to upgrade to Museum Quality Matte Canvas. Both offer a rich print with saturated coloration and are finished with our high-grade UV protection sealant offering a subtle tactile texture that gives our icons a truly authentic feel. Additionally, each Maple-shelled panel is prepared with a painted chamfered front edge as well as a round-over on the back edge to give a shadow box effect when hung on the wall. Our Icons come standard with a sliding key-hole slot on the back which allows for balanced hanging. These beautiful American-made reproductions will be a beloved addition to any home or parish at the fraction of the cost of a hand painted icon.
