Description
Feast Day/Commemorated: May 2
Saint Athanasios the Great, Archbishop of Alexandria, was born around 297 AD and quickly became known for his piety and deep study of Holy Scripture. Even as a child, his spiritual acumen was evident when Patriarch Alexander of Alexandria observed him performing a precise mock baptism of pagan playmates. Recognizing the authenticity of the act, the Patriarch took Athanasios under his wing, eventually bringing him into the clergy as a reader and then ordaining him as a deacon, setting him on the path to becoming a pivotal figure in early Christianity.
As a deacon, Saint Athanasios accompanied Patriarch Alexander to the First Ecumenical Council in Nicea in 325 AD. There, he eloquently refuted the Arian heresy, earning the approval of the Orthodox Fathers but also the lifelong enmity of the Arians, who relentlessly persecuted him. After Patriarch Alexander's passing, Athanasios, despite his humility, was unanimously chosen as his successor. For forty-seven years as archpastor of Alexandria, he endured numerous exiles and assassination attempts, often standing as the sole Orthodox bishop against widespread heresy, tirelessly defending the purity of the Faith through countless writings.
Even under the anti-Christian reign of Julian the Apostate, Saint Athanasios remained a steadfast pillar of Orthodoxy, though Julian sought his death. Providence intervened with Julian's swift demise, allowing Athanasios to guide the Alexandrian Church for another seven years until his peaceful passing in 373 AD at the age of seventy-six. His enduring legacy includes significant works such as four Orations against the Arian heresy, epistles on the divine and human natures of Christ and the Holy Spirit, and a highly recommended biography of Saint Anthony the Great.
