Christ's Holy Resurrection / Harrowing of Hades (The Icon of Pascha)

Theophany is a pivotal Christian Feast that commemorates the revelation of the Most Holy Trinity to the world through the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. During this event, God the Father's voice was heard from Heaven, the Son was baptized by Saint John the Forerunner, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Christ in the form of a dove. Historically known as the Day of Illumination and the Feast of Lights, Theophany underscores God as the ultimate Light, appearing to enlighten those in spiritual darkness and to redeem fallen humanity through divine grace.

The origins of Theophany trace back to Apostolic times, with its mention in "The Apostolic Constitutions" and early testimonies from figures like Saint Clement of Alexandria in the second century, who spoke of its celebration and the preceding night vigil. In the ancient Church, it was customary for catechumens to receive Baptism during the Vespers of Theophany, symbolizing Baptism as a spiritual illumination. Over subsequent centuries, from the fourth to the ninth, prominent Church Fathers such as Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom, Ambrose of Milan, and John of Damascus extensively commented on the significance of this Feast.

The theological depth of Theophany is further enriched by the insights of Saint John of Damascus, who explained that Christ's Baptism was not for His own purification, but rather to "bury human sin by water," fulfill the Law, unveil the mystery of the Holy Trinity, and sanctify the very nature of water, thereby providing a model for Christian Baptism. This act highlights the profound condescension of God and His active participation in the salvation of humanity, transforming a common element into a conduit of divine grace.

On the Feast of Theophany, the Holy Church proclaims the incomprehensible mystery of one God in three Persons, emphasizing the necessity of confessing and glorifying the Holy Trinity, which is one in Essence and Undivided. It serves to counter ancient theological errors and underscores the vital importance of Baptism for believers in Christ. The Church teaches that salvation and purification from sin are made possible only through the grace of the Holy Spirit, urging the faithful to worthily preserve the gifts of holy Baptism, for "As many as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ."

In essence, Theophany is a celebration of God's self-manifestation and His transformative grace. It teaches profound truths about the nature of God and the path to salvation, reminding believers of their spiritual rebirth through Baptism and the ongoing call to live in accordance with the divine gifts received. On this joyous day, the Church permits the consumption of all foods, even if the Feast falls on a traditionally fasting day like Wednesday or Friday, signifying the abundance of grace associated with this glorious revelation.

Troparion of the Feast

When thou O Lord, wast Baptized in the Jordan, the Worship of the Trinity was made manifest. For the voice of the Father bore witness unto Thee, calling thee His beloved Son, and the Spirit in the form of a dove, confirmed the truthfulness of His words. O Christ our God, who hast revealed Himself and enlightened the world, glory to Thee.
