Theophany: Celebrating God's Revelation and Christ's Baptism

On January 19th (which corresponds to January 6th on the Julian calendar), the Orthodox Church joyfully celebrates the Feast of Theophany, one of the twelve Great Feasts in its liturgical calendar. This article will explore the meaning and importance of this feast, along with a cherished (and unique!) Theophany tradition.

What is Theophany?

This significant feast goes by two common names: Theophany and Epiphany. Both are correct, though they carry a subtle distinction in their Greek roots.

  • Epiphany comes from επιφάνεια (epiphaneia), simply meaning "revelation" or "manifestation."
  • Theophany (θεοφάνεια), however, combines επιφάνεια (revelation) with θεός (theos - God), translating to "the revelation of God."

In Orthodox tradition, Theophany is the more commonly used term. In Russian-speaking countries, the feast is also often referred to as Крещение (Kreshchenie), meaning "Baptism."

The Feast of Theophany commemorates two closely related events: the baptism of Jesus Christ by Saint John the Baptist and the manifestation of Christ as God to humanity.

We learn about this momentous day from the Gospel of Matthew. John the Forerunner arrived in Judea, baptizing people and declaring:

"I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes One Who is more powerful than I, Whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." (Matthew 3:11)

One day, Jesus came to John to be baptized like everyone else. Saint John, recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, nevertheless baptized Him in the Jordan River. It was then that a profound miracle occurred:

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on Him. And a voice from Heaven said, 'This is My Son, Whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.'" (Matthew 3:16-17)

At this exact moment, the Holy Trinity was revealed to mankind for the very first time: God the Father, whose voice was heard from the sky; God the Son, Jesus Christ; and God the Holy Spirit, descending from Heaven in the form of a dove. This unified revelation stands as one of the most crucial dogmatic teachings in Christianity.
