Description
Feast Day/Commemorated: Synaxis of the Holy Archangels March 26
The Archangel Gabriel, whose name translates to "Man of God," holds a paramount role in the unfolding of divine salvation, most notably for his pivotal announcement to the Virgin Mary concerning the Incarnation of the Son of God. This joyous news, celebrated on the Feast of the Annunciation, is followed by a day of thanksgiving to God and veneration of Gabriel, acknowledging his crucial contribution to our salvation. As a faithful servant and Archistrategos (Leader of the Heavenly Hosts), Gabriel's divine service extends beyond the Annunciation, encompassing numerous significant communications throughout both the Old and New Testaments.
Gabriel's prophetic mission began long before Christ's birth, inspiring Moses to author the Pentateuch and foretelling the trials of the Chosen People to Daniel. He also brought the joyous news to Saint Anna of her miraculous conception of the Virgin Mary. His guardianship continued throughout Mary's life, as he watched over her in the Temple of Jerusalem. Later, he appeared to Priest Zachariah to announce the birth of Saint John the Baptist, the Forerunner of the Lord. In the New Testament, Gabriel was God's messenger to Saint Joseph the Betrothed, revealing the mystery of the Incarnation and warning him to flee Herod's malice, ensuring the safety of the Holy Family in Egypt.
Gabriel's devoted service culminates in his role in Christ's Passion and Resurrection. He was sent from Heaven to strengthen the Lord during His agonizing prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Following Christ's crucifixion, it was the Archangel Gabriel who delivered the triumphant news of the Resurrection to the Myrrh-Bearing Women. Recognizing his unwavering zeal in fulfilling God's will and his constant intercession for Christians, the Orthodox Church encourages the faithful to offer prayers to this great Archangel, celebrating his Synaxis on July 13th, in addition to the general commemoration of all angels on November 8th.
