Early Life and Ordination as Deacon

Holy Apostle Philip of the Seventy, one of the seven deacons, is distinct from Philip, one of the Twelve Apostles. Born in Palestine, this Philip was married and had children. Following the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Twelve Apostles appointed him as a deacon in the Church of Jerusalem. His role, along with the other six deacons (including the Archdeacon Stephen), was to manage offerings from the faithful and care for widows, orphans, and the needy. This appointment marked the beginning of his dedicated service within the early Christian community.

Ministry in Samaria and Notable Conversions

When persecution against Christians intensified, leading to the stoning of Protomartyr Stephen, Apostle Philip left Jerusalem and sought refuge in Samaria. There, he embarked on a highly successful mission, tirelessly preaching Christianity. Among his notable converts was Simon the magician, who, after being baptized, remained a close follower of Philip (Acts 8:9-13). This conversion underscored Philip's persuasive preaching and the power of the Gospel he proclaimed.

Encounter with the Ethiopian Eunuch

Guided by an angel of the Lord, Saint Philip journeyed along the road connecting Jerusalem with Gaza. Here, he encountered an influential official of the empress of Ethiopia. Through divine guidance, Philip explained the Scriptures to the Ethiopian, leading to the official's conversion and baptism (Acts 8:26-39). This significant event highlights Philip's role in spreading Christianity beyond Jewish communities and into African lands, demonstrating the universality of the Gospel message.

Extensive Preaching and Episcopal Consecration

Saint Philip continued his tireless work, preaching the Word of God throughout many lands in the Near East bordering Palestine. His unwavering dedication to spreading the faith led the Apostles in Jerusalem to further elevate him within the Church. They consecrated him as a bishop and sent him to Tralles in Asia Minor. In Tralles, he continued his fervent ministry, converting and baptizing many more people, further expanding the reach of Christianity through his evangelistic efforts.

Peaceful Repose and Lasting Legacy

Having dedicated his entire life to the service of God and the propagation of the Christian faith, Saint Philip lived to a venerable old age. He peacefully reposed, leaving behind a profound legacy as a foundational figure in the early Church's missionary endeavors. His tireless preaching, miraculous conversions, and unwavering commitment to the Gospel serve as an inspiring example of apostolic zeal and humble service to Christ.
